Fur Shui. Have you heard of it? It’s Californian for “feng shui for pets”. We all deserve to live a life of balance and good energy… and so do the furry friends we share it with. Whether you seek to change a tendency your pet has, or simply make life the best you can for them, below are a few fresh and easy strategies you can use to create great “fur shui”!

I once dated a man whose best feature was his dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Let’s call her Betsy.

Betsy drew attention wherever she went. She was not only beautiful; she was good-natured, affectionate, had wonderful dog-manners and was clever, too. She’d scooped numerous awards over the past three years at Crufts, the most prestigious British dog show, and was on the label of a popular canned dog food. She had great mates on her walks, frolicking playfully with any mutt out there, and was happy to be petted by admiring children and adults. Her owner adored her and from the moment I met her, I did too. All our dates involved taking Betsy places she might enjoy. (When I realised this, we were sitting watching a dog-show DVD at his place after Betsy had gone to bed. I had to push the pause button on our relationship)

Betsy, you could say, had great Fur Shui. Have you heard of it? It’s a Californian for “feng shui for pets”. Before you scoff, consider Betsy. Life worked for her. In feng shui, we would say she was born with excellent Heaven luck- under good stars, with beauty, brains and at the right time to the right sort of owner. But what if your beloved pet wasn’t? What if you found Fido or Sooty in a box under a bridge, or in the pound, or they were a hand-me down from friends or family that died or had to move away? Then I would recommend you adapt your space to give them the best go of life possible- to offer them the best chance of loving you with their whole little heart. You both need Fur Shui.

One original fur shui remedy goes like this:

If your dog is antisocial, bring more of the colour green into its life. Green strengthens communication energy and can make your pet easier to get along with. Tying a green ribbon around their collar or getting them a green sleeping blanket are recommended.

Here are some Feng Shui By The Sea fur shui enhancements to ensure your pet is welcoming positive energy into every aspect of their life:

Pay attention to where your dog likes to sleep, and if possible, make this area their bed. Dogs naturally are drawn to positive energy places for themselves.

Do you know what year your pet was born? If so, calculating their Kua number will help you discover just how nurturing your home is for them. Visit http://www.fengshuibythesea.com/life-by-the-sea.htm and look it up on the two tables. If your home faces one of your pet’s good directions, it’s a positive space for them to learn and grow. If not, consider using a side door or side yard for them, and make sure their bed is in a good area of the home for them.

Remember that equal balances of Yin and Yang in life are a cornerstone of good feng, and fur, shui. Does your pet receive measures of both dark and light, loud and quiet, activity and rest? All action (yang activities, such as chasing a ball, guarding, and eating) without enough passivity (yin life-aspects, such as cuddles, rests, and grooming) will lead to an imbalance over time and result in disruptive behaviour.

To attract certain energies into your dog’s life, do look to the principles of Eight Mansion feng shui school. For a dog partner, or to introduce another pet or family member into the home, use lots of the colour pink, and place a rose quartz crystal in the vicinity of your pets living space, to soften the heart and foster good relationships. To strengthen an older pets’ health, especially their joints, keep a bamboo plant or sprig near to where they sleep. Promote playfulness and communication in a shy animal with the colour white and element metal- a chain collar, or silver-coloured leash will do the trick. And, finally, if you, like Betsy’s owner, want to enhance your pet’s fame and fortune, activate the Fire energy of the South direction, by using splashes of red in the areas your pet likes to hang out, and relax together in front of an open fire or by candle-light.

May this feng and fur shui bring your little loving friends more energy and happiness than ever before!
